First, we are playing to young adults who pack the dance floors jitterbugging and swing dancing to the music of Louis Jordan, Nellie Lutcher and other pop stars of the 40s and 50s. ![]() In the past twelve years, we have added two new players and our band has evolved in two important ways. We celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2018. If the theme of your event is the Roaring Twenties, Mardi Gras, the Great Gatsby, Prohibition, the Jazz Age, Swing Dancing or Ragtime, we are the band for you. Our busy schedule abounds with weddings, worship and memorial services, educational clinics, fundraisers and major parties. Our concert performances never fail to delight listeners of all ages. Our great singer, Wende Harston, brings to life the great hit songs of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Ethel Waters, Alberta Hunter, Helen Humes and many other early blues singers. We faithfully recreate the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Bix Beiderbecke, Wilbur DeParis, Turk Murphy and many others. We have performed at every major Dixieland/Swing jazz festival in North America. For over sixty years the QCJB has been delighting audiences with the happy sounds of the 20s, 30s and 40s-Gospel, Early Jazz, Ragtime, Swing, Blues and Spirituals. We first came across Victor and Gustavo at the Chapel Allerton Arts Jazz Sunday in 2022 and they blew us away with their mix of classic Brazilian tunes alongside a number of original latin jazz compositions.From Denver, Colorado, USA and we play Dixieland Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Classic Jazz, Hot Jazz or whatever you call it. Victor Estevez: trumpet, Gustavo Andrade: tenor sax, Joseph Frost-Tesfaye: piano, Jarred Dean: bass, Joel Stedman: congas, flute, Miles Pillinger: drums. Taking inspiration from global folk music, the band are melodically driven with a modal and groove based focus. Their influences are the likes of Hermetto Pascoal, Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter.Īwen Ensemble are a Leeds based Contemporary Jazz Collective who played a beautiful set for us at the Cookridge Street tent last year. This quartet includes Olivia Cuttill (Trumpet), Nico Widdowson (Piano) and Fergus Quill (Double Bass). Miles Pillinger is a drummer studying at Leeds Conservatoire – he’s been in many bands for JazzLeeds over the last three years notably when we were keeping the music live outside at Seven Arts courtyard during the Covid crisis. Led by sax player Brian Whittington they are now a well established band on the Northern scene performing an exciting mix of jazz, Latin, blues, funk and fusion, all played with their own distinctive twist.Ĥ.30 Miles Pillinger Quartet with Olivia Cuttill This exciting line-up features Ben Lowman on tenor sax, Martin Longhawn on piano, John Marley on bass and Tim Carter on drumsĪbtuse originally started off at one of the JazzLeeds workshops now running at Northlight in Chapel Allerton. Her Big Band has always sold out at our Seven Arts venue. Kate has worked in a wide variety of stars in the music industry most recently with DJ Judge Jules. Kate Peters and her Quartet perform with an exciting set with some jazzy takes on some classic numbers. Jazz singer and educator Tessa Smith has been rehearsing choirs for many years – the JazzVoices choir is our community based choir, singing jazz blues and gospel tunes for fun. ![]() Dave Evans leads a group of young musicians from the school to perform at Leeds Jazz Festival – come and cheer them on!. ![]() JazzLeeds have been working with Roundhay School in a project to introduce young people to improvisation, groove playing, playing by ear and from memory – skills and creative practices that are part of Jazz.
